The Mouse and the Motorcycle

My 4 year old loves stories at bed time. He likes books, but after they are closed he will still ask for a story. I’m not very creative when it comes to making up stories and my memory of years passed seem to fail me at a moments notice, so the stories I come up with don’t really suffice. I’ve thought about chapter books for him for a while, but just didn’t know where to start. I saw this pin on Pinterest and thought I would see if any of the books might seem interesting to my son.  First book on the list? The Mouse and the Motorcycle. My son is fascinated with motorcycles and what boy doesn’t find mice at least intriguing? I knew this would be the perfect chapter book. And it is written by Beverly Clearly! Did you know that she was born in McMinnville, Oregon the same city where the movie The Quarterback Princess is filmed? I know my sisters are excited that they just read that fact! Have you not seen The Quarterback Princess? Helen Hunt stars as a girl who joins an all boy football team. Yes, it is a great film and if you ever come across it (please Netflix add it to your selection) you must watch it.

Anyway, I digress… I’ve been reading to him a chapter or two each night before bed. I wondered how he would do just lying down and listening with almost no pictures, so I asked him tonight at dinner to tell his dad about the story we have been reading. I was surprised to hear the details he remembers of the story. I must admit it has been a bit of a challenge to read a chapter book out loud. I’m well practiced in Dr. Suess and David Shannon books, but longer sentences, with bigger words out loud, complete with voice inflection is more challenging than I had expected. Nonetheless, I love it.  I know it has to be good for his a.) attention span, b.) his vocabulary skills and c.) his imagination.

What have been some of your favorite books to read with kids? Even if it’s not a chapter book. I have a 2 year old girl as well and I am always looking for new books for her.

This post makes Soren’s librarian auntie happy for several reasons: his love of books and storytelling; motorcycles; and a shout out to The Quarterback Princess!!

I LOVE these pics of Soren! You need to publish these! They should be hanging in a children’s library or classroom somewhere.

Great pics, and one of Izzy’s favorites. Her teacher read it aloud in first grade. I think Carl and I need to make a list for you. Have you read Good Night Construction Site by Tom Lichtenheld? We’ve recently discovered his books and met him yesterday for a library book talk…Shark vs. Train is fun too. At his age my kids loved Henry & Mudge and Amelia Bedelia- pics but are a little more words on the page. There are a ton in each series. Sofi loved Geronimo Stilton series- more graphic, and Iz loves the Magic School bus books. Jim Trelease writes some great books for parents that have read aloud lists in them…one of his books is Hey Listen To This, and it has a few chapters from good read alouds. I could go on all day about kids books. I wished it was a major in College. :)

Great pictures of Soren! We loved The Mouse and the Motorcycle, too! Mr Popper’s Penguins is another favorite at our house.
